US salutes Zambia’s peace efforts

THE United States of America (USA) has commended Zambia for its role in fostering peace and security in Africa.
This came to light when US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield held a bilateral meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba in New York.
The two discussed various issues, including efforts to combat Ebola, peace and security in Africa, governance and peacekeeping.
According to a statement by First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at Permanent Mission of Zambia to the United Nations Chibaula Silwamba, the duo exchanged views on issues of interest to both countries and the international community.
Mr Silwamba said Mr Kalaba and Ms Thomas-Greenfield met at UN headquarters in New York on Friday on the sidelines of the Annual General Assembly General debate.
Mr Kalaba assured the US government of Zambia’s continued commitment to promote and encourage peace and security in the Southern African Development (SADC) and the entire Africa as a whole.
He said peace and security would enhance social and economic development of the people in the 54-nation continent.?Mr Kalaba and Ms Thomas-Greenfield renewed their governments’ resolve to strengthen bilateral ties.
Zambia’s ambassadors to the UN and US Dr Mwaba Kasese- Bota and Mr Palan Mulonda, respectively, Ministry of Foreign Affairs director for international organisations Eliphas Chinyonga and assistant director for the Americas and Caribbean region Patricia Chisanga-Kondolo accompanied the minister at the bilateral meeting.
Meanwhile, Mr Kalaba was yesterday expected to hold a series of meetings with German institutions in Frankfurt with the aim of appreciating their cooperation with Zambia.
Mr Kalaba, who was in New York attending the UN General Assembly which was opened by Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon, left New York on Sunday and was to transit through Frankfurt yesterday.
This is contained in a Press statement issued by the Embassy of Zambia in Germany first secretary Press and public relations Yvonne Shibemba.
During his 10-0hour transit period in Frankfurt, the minister was scheduled to meet with the director of International Chamber of Commerce of Industry – Foreign Trade, Dr Jurgen Ratzinger, German Development Bank (KFW) director of the department for ‘Africa Regional?Programmes’ and KFW head of division infrastructure, Southern Africa Dr Martin Witte.
He was also expected to meeting Piet Kleffmann, KFW, head of division commerce, rural development and natural resources, Norbert Noisser, foreign trade location policy, Ministry of Trade, Wiesbaden and the German Society for International Cooperation – GIZ.
