THE opposition MMD says it will be holding provincial conventions starting from the first quarter of next year before holding a national conference ahead of the 2016 presidential elections.
Party national secretary Muhabi Lungu said at a briefing in Lusaka yesterday when he received 81 defectors from the UPND and the Patriotic Front (PF) that the party was set for conventions.
“We are re-organising ourselves in readiness of the 2016 general elections, in the first quarter of next year, we will be holding provincial convention in readiness of the national party convention,” he said.
Mr Lungu reiterated that the MMD was the mother of democracy and would embrace everyone who wanted to join the former ruling party.
Speaking at the same event Lusaka Province chairperson Whiteson Mtonga said MMD was a peaceful party and had so much to offer to the Zambian people.
Mr Mtonga said the defection of members from other parties to MMD was the beginning of the great revolution of the party.
“These People have defected to a party which has a vision because they have seen that MMD was the only party which had their interest at heart,” he said.
UPND Matero youth secretary Evaristo Magangu who joined the MMD yesterday said he had defected from the UPND after realising that his party had no vision for the country.
