THE Copperbelt University (CBU) has signed a K24 million contract with Sogecoa Zambia Limited for phase two of tahe construction of the School of Medicine in Ndola.
The K24, 348, 134.31 contract, expected to commence on November 28 this year, has a completion period of 11 months.
CBU Vice-Chancellor Naison Ngoma said during the signing ceremony, that the construction of the School of Medicine would enable the university make significant contributions to the health sector in the country.
Prof Ngoma said once the construction works were completed, the university would be able to enroll more than 300 students to do general medicine, 100 for dental surgery, 300 nurses and many more in clinical and bio-medical sciences.
He paid tribute to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and the Jewish Community in Zambia for providing support to CBU in ensuring the success of the school of medicine.
“The construction of the school of medicine in Ndola will enable us make a mammoth contribution to the health sector and special tribute to the Ministry of Education which has been instrumental in the sourcing of funds for construction.
“The Ministry of Health has provided facilities for the university to teach and the Jewish community provided seed money to kick start construction works,” he said.
Sogecoa Zambia Limited general manager, Shen Sengmei assured CBU that the company would follow the conditions laid out in the contract.
Ms Shen said Sogecoa had vast experience in construction and thus would make sure that it constructed infrastructure that was safe and comfortable for students.
Sogecoa was awarded Phase one of the school of medicine construction works valued at K11, 987 million.
