Munkoyo kills 2, 17 hospitalised

TWO people died after consuming poisonous Munkoyo? a traditional brew, in Manyama area of Solwezi.
The two that died, an 18-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were among a group of 19 that consumed the munkoyo.
17 were admitted to Solwezi General Hospital when they developed severe diarrhea and vomiting, shortly after consuming the munkoyo.
A Solwezi General Hospital public relations officer Levy Muna and North-Western Province police chief Eugene Sibote confirmed this yesterday.
Mr Sibote said the incident happened on Saturday about 80 kilometres from Solwezi town.
The 19 had gathered to carry out some work at a farm and that the host offered the refreshment to them.
“While doing some work in the field, the people started consuming the munkoyo and suddenly, they developed severe diarrhea and vomiting,” Mr Sibote said.
He said the three-year-old girl and the 18-year-old boy were not too luck as they died on the spot while the others got some help and were rushed for treatment.
Samples of the munkoyo were collected and sent for laboratory analysis.
In another development seven houses collapsed after heavy rains in Kyabankaka area of Solwezi on Thursday night.
?Regional coordinator for the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) Pater Kabaso said the rain left seven families in the cold before they received tents from the unit.
