THE nineteen-year-old University of Zambia (UNZA) student who is admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) is responding well to medication and has since started eating light meals.
Lizwe Ndhlovu sustained injuries last Friday after the students who were protesting over delayed meal allowances ran battles with the police which resulted in one of the hostels being burnt.
Two rooms in the Soweto Hostel were completely burnt in the inferno which started when officers fired a flare missile that landed on one of the beds in the rooms on the third floor of the building through the widow.
Police managed to apprehend and detain some of the rioting students who would commence trial tomorrow.
Contradicting reports have emerged with the police claiming that Lizwe jumped out of a moving vehicle but Lizwe’s schoolmate who witnessed the incident alleges that Lizwe jumped out of the vehicle because of excessive beatings he was subjected to by the police.
Meanwhile a check at the UTH revealed that Lizwe has continued making steady progress in recovering.
UTH public relations officer Mwenye Mulenga and Lizwe’s mother, Rosaria Ndhlovu both said in separate interviews that Lizwe was able to talk.
“He is improving he is able to feed on light things like juices and porridge,” Ms Ndhlovu said.
Mr Mulenga said that Lizwe is responding well to treatment and is stable.
