CDHBy MWANGALA LISELI –
THE Government is on course in the phase two of the Cancer Diseases Hospital (CDH) project, Health Permanent Secretary Davy Chikamata has said.
Dr Chikamata said in Lusaka yesterday that the hospital would have wards with a 269 bed-space capacity for in-patients.
He was speaking during the Open Day for Cancer Diseases Hospital held under the theme ‘Zambia at 50 with specialised quality cancer care’.
Dr Chikamata said the Government would ensure that specialised quality cancer care was availed to all citizens as currently people from outside Lusaka had to share the available space at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
He said not only would the public be blessed with the facilities of CDH phase two, which include high-tech radiotherapy and laboratory equipment, but would also have more human resource to work in the new departments.
Dr Chikamata said the Government would soon start work on CDH phase three through the construction of nine more centres, one in each province.
He said this would enable people to have access to specialised quality cancer care services closer to them and their families.
Dr Chikamata said Zambia had come a long way in the fight against cancer and many challenges in the fight had been encountered.
He said today cancer was the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide killing more people than HIV, TB and malaria combined.
