SPORTS Minister, Chishimba Kambwili says though he believes in the Chipolopolo technical staff’s ability to win Zambia the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship, there is need to beef up the bench.
Kambwili said in an interview in Lusaka that there was nothing wrong with fusing in other people to help coach Honour Janza at the AFCON but emphasised the need to hire an experienced local trainer.
“I have every confidence in the current technical bench’s ability to win Zambia the AFCON title. We can bring in some more people to help but I still have confidence in the technical bench. Though if need arises to beef up the team, there is nothing wrong more especially bringing in the local veteran coaches,” he said.
He challenged the national team to work hard and replicate the performance of the 2012 AFCON winning team, saying it would be the best gift for late President Michael Sata.
“I have said it before that the best gift will can give his Excellency the late president is winning the 2015 AFCON. It will be the best gift for Zambia and a best way to say bye to Micheal Chilufya Sata,” he said.
He said the national team had everything at its disposal to beat any team on the continent but that was only possible through hard work, discipline and resilience.
Kambwili said it does not matter the group Zambia was in but what the technical bench should now focus on was knowing the technicality of each opponent.
“It’s not about which teams are in our group but how we can beat them. The Zambian team has all what it takes to beat any team. But that calls for preparedness and I have confidence that the technical bench is already on it’s feet. No team should be underrated in anyway,’ he said.
Zambia is in Group B alongside Tunisia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Cape Verde.
