ZAMBIAN rider David Reeve put up a rare performance at the start to the 2015 Dakar Rally in Argentina which saw him gain a staggering 45 places after Day-One of the World’s toughest race to finish in 58th place.
Reeve, who started in position 103, was left ecstatic about his first day performance which allowed him to overtake a lot of riders who could keep him away from the leading pack.
The Mazabuka rider is 18 minutes 18 seconds behind the leaders and is in touch with all his rivals in front of him but equally has a number of riders hot on his heels.
Reeve’s amazing run was during the 175 km Stage-One stretch which is the shortest stage of the competition but gives riders challenges as it has all types of terrain that are found in the Dakar rally. Reeve’s excelling in this stage means he can make it through all the terrain in the ace and will remain a threat to all the seasoned riders in the top 50 brackets, which will be an honour having twice broken his legs in the last two attempts. Today he starts among riders who are on his pace for a short stint, so we can expect a few to come to him toward the end of the day.
Coming from the shortest stage, Reeve and the rest of the 161 bikers will go straight to the longest stage which covers a distance of 518km starting with hard terrain which is dusty before the ending on sand.
Otherwise Great Britain’s Sam Sunderland, who started in sixth place is leading the Bikes category and is closely followed by Paulo Goncalves of Portugal while Spanish Legend Marc Coma, who started in first place is lying third.
The race continues today and ends on January 17.
