By KASONDE KASONDE –
CHIEF Mukubwe of the Lenje speaking people of Ngabwe District has given Government 11,587 hectares of land.
The land is meant for the construction of the district administration offices and other Government departments.
The traditional leader said there was need for chiefs to partner with Government to help deliver development to the people in the newlycreated districts.
Chief Mukubwe said this during the signing ceremony of the Ngabwe District Township boundary maps.
He was happy with the rate at which Government was delivering it’s promises to the people in his area.
The chief appealed to the Government to consider building a police station among the first structures to help reduce the incidences of violence in the area.
Meanwhile, Central Province Permanent Secretary Edwidge Mutale said the signing of the boundary maps would facilitate the beginning of construction in the district.
Ms Mutale said the contractor reported to the site two months ago but could not start work because the layout plans had not yet been done.
“Now that the maps have been signed, we expect that the contractor would immediately move on site and start the works”, Ms Mutale said.
She said this would bring a number of benefits to the people of Ngabwe as a number of developmental programmes would be initiated.
Ms Mutale also bemoaned the high levels of violent incidents in the district which she attributed to the long distance to the nearest police station.
“The nearest police station is 180 Kilometres away from the district which is in Kabwe hence the high levels of crime”, Ms Mutale said.
Speaking earlier Ngabwe District Commissioner Melody Phiri expressed happiness with the signing of the maps.
Ms Phiri said the ceremony signified the beginning of the long awaited development of the District.
The people of Ngabwe had for a long time waited to start seeing developmental projects in the area.
Area Member of Parliament Eddie Musonda said the district would also see the construction of the first ever district hospital.
