A WOMAN of Chikankanta is battling for her life in Mazabuka General Hospital after being hacked with an axe by her husband who later committed suicide.
Yvonne Mubiana, 21, of Namembo Village in Chief Nalwama’s area, was hacked several times by her husband, Brywell Hangoma, 22.
The couple was said to have been entangled in a marital dispute which led to the two fighting at their home and that the man later committed suicide.
Southern Province Police Chief, Mary Chikwanda, confirmed the incident which happened on January 19, this year around 23:00 hours.
Ms Chikwanda said, Ms Mubiana, reported the wounding to police after her husband allegedly hacked her with an axe.
“The victim sustained multiple injuries on her left thigh and hand after her husband hacked her with an axe,” she said.
Ms Chikwanda said, the victim was later taken to Mazabuka General Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.
She said, when Mr Hangoma noticed that he had severely injured his wife and left her unconscious, he went missing from his home.
She said Mr Hangoma was later found dead the following day hanging from a tree a few metres away from his home.
“It’s like upon seeing that the woman was badly injured, he decided to take his own life by committing suicide,” she said.
Ms Chikwanda said police rushed to the village and retrieved the body.
