THE African Development Bank (AfDB) will remember late resident representative Freddie Kwesiga for the unprecedented mobilisation and leveraging of investment resources with the Zambian portfolio reaching US$750 million.
Dr Kwesiga who died on Sunday in Nairobi, Kenya would be most missed for his role as the resident representative for effectively representing the AfDB for the period 2009 till the time of his demise.
The AfDB field office said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that based on Dr Kwesiga’s work, Zambia had become one of its most prominent business and investment partners in Africa with a growing portfolio of around US$750 million.a
During his tenure, Dr Kwesiga established a web of connections with people of various divides and ranks in Government, International organisations, private sector and ordinary citizens.
Among the landmark projects and studies initiated during his office in Zambia included the Kazungula Bridge project, Itezhi-tezhi hydro power, the Maamba Power project, the Nacala Corridor Project and the Mpulungu port expansion project among several others.
“Dr Kwesiga, a Ugandan citizen had his heart deeply rooted in Zambia throughout his life,” the statement said.
He spent a combined 26 years working in Zambia as an accomplished agro-forestry scientist before joining the AfDB in 2007 as manager in the agriculture division and also as coordinator of the African Water facility before being posted to the Zambian field office in 2009 as the resident representative.
He is survived by his wife Irene and five children. He will be put to rest in Uganda this Saturday.
