THE MMD on the Copperbelt has called for a national convention to save the party from total collapse.
MMD provincial chairman Moses Mumba and Provincial Executive Committee secretary Obby Mwansa said in a joint statement that Nevers Mumba should resign and call for a convention.
Dr Mumba’s performance in the just ended Presidential Election was below par and that he could not even win an election as a councillor as evidenced by the votes he was getting in each constituency.
“We therefore demand that Dr Mumba should call for the national convention immediately as it is the only remedy to or current leadership failure. Dr Mumba is not a capable leader and he has failed to show that he can deliver,” read the statement.
The members said Dr Mumba has allegedly failed to observe the rules and regulations governing the party by expelling elected officials and replacing them with his own people.
They advised Dr Mumba to pave way to those that can perform and revive the party.
But Dr Mumba’s special assistant Raphael Nakachinda said the two officials were no longer MMD members because they defected to the Patriotic Front (PF) in 2011.
Mr Nakachinda said the two were impersonators and liable for a criminal offence.
He said the Copperbelt provincial chairman was Mr Densen Chisunka who was appointed under the hospice of Mr Muhabi Lungu.
Meanwhile, Mr Chisunka has said the party in the province has embarked on the reformation of structures, to revive the former party ahead of the 2016 general elections.
Mr Chisunka said in an interview yesterday that all party structures in the province would be reorganised to ensure that the former ruling party was a formidable force in next year’s polls.
“We are rebuilding our structures to ensure that we regain the fair share of political mileage in the province and this will lead to a better performance come 2016,” he said.
Mr Chisunka also said the party will not entertain disloyal members who are issuing derogatory statements against party president Dr Mumba.
