POLICE in Kabwe have arrested a former Kabwe mayor for assaulting a council police officer.
Moses Mwansa is also alleged to have attempted to grab a firearm from a State police officer in an effort to resist the closure of his bar which was found open after 01:00 hours.
Both Central Province Deputy Police Chief Edwin Bwanga and Kabwe Municipal Council public relations manager Anne Mumba confirmed the incident separately.
Mr Bwanga said that police opened a docket of assault following a complaint against Mr Mwansa and that he was briefly detained at Kasanda police station but released on police bond.
Ms Mumba explained that according to the report received, the officer was allegedly assaulted after an attempt to close the former mayor’s bar, which was found operational beyond the stipulated time.
She said further investigations revealed that Mr Mwansa was also illegally operating a car wash, bar without a liquor licence certificate.
She said that the council would continue with its random operation and that it would not be intimidated.
No person was above the law and asked business operators especially those running bars to ensure that they follow regulations.
The council is planning to suspend Mr Mwansa for bringing the council into disrepute.
The council felt that the former mayor, who is still a councillor, be suspended following a report opened against him.
