GLASGOW 2014 Commonwealth Game bronze medallist Ben Muziyo is a mong the 27 boxers coach Kennedy Kanyanta has summoned into the provisional national team ahead of the Congo Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games (AAG).
Kanyanta said Zambia will approach the 11th edition of the AAG to be held from September 4 to 19 with the aim of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
“We know what is at stake, and that is to qualify for the Rio 2016
Olympic Games in Brazil and those in the provisional team must compete for eight slots because that the number needed,” Kanyanta said.
The Buffaloes’ duo of Charles Lumbwe and Martin Chibela have also made the team together with knockout specialist Mbachi Kaonga of Red Arrows, Nkwazi’s Peter Ngoma and Chilufya Chikwanda as well as Chester Simpungwe, Philemon Njovu, Goodwell Shamenda and Ben Sakutamba of Zambia National Service (ZNS).
Others are Bwalya Lumbwe of Mufulira, the Indeni pair of Obed Mutapa and Binwell Chupa, Ndola City Council (NCC) trio of Joseph Chewe, Keegan Mumba and Caristo Bwalya.
The women trio of Juliana Kasonka of (Red Arrows), Violet Chalwe of Nkwazi and Green Buffaloes’ Sally Mambwe has also been named in the team.
Kanyanta said it was time for Zambian boxers to shine at the international stage and restore the country’s boxing reputation.
“Zambia has top quality boxers who can fight at any level and I think we will leave no stone unturned in preparing the boxers for the AAG. I am very confident that at least five of our boxers should qualify,” he said.
