Nakonde border reopens

NAKONDE border in Muchinga Province is now fully operational after it was closed for about three days following commotion which engulfed the neighbouring town of Tunduma in Tanzania.
Operations at the Zambian border, which were halted following sporadic fighting in Tunduma, are now back to normal with the traffic from both sides of the border flowing smoothly.
Nakonde District Commissioner James Singoyi confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Nakonde yesterday.
Mr Singoyi said authorities on both sides of the border were working peacefully.?Nakonde border was on Tuesday closed to the public following the confusion that erupted in Tunduma.
Supporters of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and the opposition Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) have been fighting over a?disputed piece of land.
Mr Singoyi said fuel tankers carrying fuel were the first to cross the border at 04:00 hours yesterday, adding that the flow of traffic has since continued without any disruptions.
He said the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and other revenue collection agencies at the border had lost millions of Kwacha in revenue in the last few days the border had experienced disruptions in business as a result of the violence in Tanzania.
Mr Singoyi was, however, quick to state that security on both sides of the border was still tight with armed Police officers keeping vigil.
Earlier, briefing Muchinga Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe at his office yesterday, Mr Singoyi said business at the border town had been disrupted because of the violence that was experienced at Tunduma.
A check by ZANIS at the border revealed that the clearing of vehicles and other goods was progressing normally with cross-border traders spotted having their goods cleared.??Both Zambian and Tanzanian buses were also spotted loading passengers?and goods at the main bus station.-ZANIS
