SIX unemployed former University of Zambia (UNZA) graduates have been arrested for unlawful assembly.
The six were among the unemployed UNZA graduates who gathered at Arcades Shopping Complex in Lusaka around 09:00 hours to protest against high unemployment levels in the country.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda confirmed the arrest in a statement yesterday and said the six had been charged with unlawful assembly.
The former students, who were clad in UNZA graduation gowns and displayed placards announced their planned demonstrations on Sunday evening.
“Six former students arrested are among others dressed in graduation gowns protesting against unemployment levels, the police in riot gear were monitoring them and their movements, they were arrested around 10:00 hours,” she said.
They claimed they had failed to find jobs due to the continued freeze on employment imposed by the Government.
Ms Chanda said others escaped upon noticing the presence of police and those arrested were currently in custody and would appear in court soon.
