WOMEN and girls have become victims of rape and attacks from wild animals as a result of walking long distances to fetch water, Mines, Energy and Water Development Permanent Secretary Emelda Chola has observed.
Brigadier General Chola said it was in this line that Government was implementing ground water development in rural areas and for strategic institutions like public schools, chiefs’ palaces and rural health centres.
She said the on-going programme of sinking boreholes especially in rural communities would reduce the risks women face as a result of fetching water from distant places.
The permanent secretary said Government was making steady progress to ensure all people in the country, especially in rural communities, have access to safe drinking water.
Brig Gen Chola said this during the handover of a borehole to Buche Buche Primary School in Chief Nalubamba’s area in Chikankanta District. — ZANIS.
