MUFULIRA Municipal Council has embarked on a project to construct a modern abattoir at a cost of K250,000.
Mufulira Mayor Tomson Ngulube said in an interview that the move was to ensure the district had a hygienic place for slaughtering animals.
Mr Ngulube said due to the absence of the facility, people in the district resorted to unhygienic slaughter of animals.
He said the current abattoir was in a dilapidated state and paused a health hazard to the residents.
“People are slaughtering animals anywhere because we do not have an abattoir. The one we have is in a dilapidated state,” he said.
Mr Ngulube said the contractors were already on site and that the project would be completed in two months.
Meanwhile, Mr Ngulube said the urban road works that have stalled due to heavy rain, had resumed.
He said the construction of urban roads that commenced last year would be completed in two weeks.
“The road works stalled due to heavy rains, but now I can confirm that the works have resumed and will be completed in two weeks’ time,” he said.
