FIRST Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda has called for continued unity and peace in Zambia.
Dr Kaunda who is celebrating his 91st birthday was happy that Zambia had continued to be the most peaceful country in Africa.
Speaking when he received gifts from United National Independence Party (UNIP) central committee members in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Kaunda said Zambians should continue to cherish the unity and peace the country was currently enjoying.
Dr Kaunda who was in a jovial mood sung his favourite song “Tiyende Pamodzi” and continued to joke with the central committee members, who were led by their President Tilyenji Kaunda.
At some point he eulogised his late wife Betty, describing her as a great UNIP woman whose works should be emulated.
He urged the UNIP members to continue being committed and continue doing what was right.
“As UNIP members, continue to do the right thing in the right way and endeavour to succeed in the struggle,” he said.
He was grateful that UNIP members had visited him and presented him with gifts. He urged them to continue serving Zambians to the best of their ability.
“Service to humanity is what is important and standing for what is right on this earth,” he said.
Earlier, UNIP vice-president Njekwa Anamela commended Dr Kaunda for passing on values of love and unity.
He said Dr Kaunda would remain a hero who championed the fight against injustice and united Zambia as one nation.
