ZAMBIA yesterday kept alive their push for a first ever silver medal at the on-going All Africa Junior Golf Challenge as they stayed third and five strokes off second-placed Zimbabwe going into the last round today.
The Zambian juniors yesterday posted 230, their best at this tournament for a three-round total of 701, which was five shots adrift Zimbabwe, who also carded 230, and 15 strokes better than fourth-placed Uganda.
Meanwhile, leaders South Africa kept widening the gap with Zimbabwe and after yesterday’s 217 they moved to a three-round total of 652, a whopping 43 shots better than Zimbabwe.
After a poor start to this tournament which saw Zambia in fourth place on a 238 score, the Patrick Mwendapole-coached side improved by five shots on the second day and a further three yesterday.
Just as the team was improving in its scoring, so was the best player on the Zambian side changing hands on the third day running also the worst performing player in the home side.
Yesterday, the best performer in the Zambian camp was Patrick Mwendapole Jnr, who shot a two-over-par 75 with Gabriel Chibale in close second and just a shot off while Tristan Brice was third on six-over-par 79.
Kelvin Chibuye, the best player for Zambia on Day-One shot a woeful eight-over-par 81 and his score not getting on the score-sheet.
The day’s best performer was Loubser Herman of South Africa on two-under-par 71 and closely followed by countryman Marco Steyn who was just a shot off while Mauritian Emmanuel D’Arifat has a 31-over-par 94.
The tournament ends today.
