KABWE Golf Club captain Kamal Desai has bowed to the pressure to convene a special annual general meeting to iron out pending issues.
This follows a petition by the 23 members on April 27, who called on the executive committee led by Desai to convene a special meeting to determine the capability of the leaders in running the affairs of the club.
Desai said in an interview yesterday that the board of trustees that convened at the weekend set June 21 as the date for a special meeting.
He said the move was done in conformity with Article 22 of the club constitution that provided for the executive committee to hold a special meeting if it received a requisition signed by 10 ordinary members at the club when any question of urgent importance arose.
“The board of trustees actually met on Saturday and it was decided that a special meeting be held on June 21. We couldn’t just publicise the details of our meeting because we wanted our members to see this on the notice board,” Desai said.
Desai said the allegations raised against the executive committee were serious and needed to be resolved amicably.
“We want to resolve all the issues at hand so that we begin running the club smoothly. I, therefore, urge all members either petitioners or non-petitioners to turn up for the meeting,” he said.
The petitioners have accused Desai of having irregularly obtained loans on behalf of the club without seeking the approval of voting members and that the staff at the club had gone four months without being paid their dues.
The members have further alleged executive committee of abrogating the constitution by allowing invalid nominations for elections in clear contrast to the legal provisions in the club constitution.
Other issues raised were that the club could not run without trustees, a president and his vice which were vital to good governance as well as the non-payment of four months salaries for the staff at the club.
