A SOMBER mood gripped Saint Mulumba Special School in Choma yesterday after one of the visually impaired teachers, together with his aunt, who was guiding him to school, were killed by a speeding motorist.
Simuyuni Chingobe, 29, who was a computer tutor, and her aunt only identified as Ms Josephine, were hit by unregistered Nissan Premier driven by Bright Jalata, 26, of house number PB49 Macha Township in Choma yesterday.
The duo of house number PNS 100 White Township, were heading to the school situated on Macha Road at the time of the accident around 06:00 hours.
Mr Chingobe taught grade six pupils.
Southern Province Police Chief, Mary Chikwanda confirmed the incident in an interview.
The incident happened when Mr Jalata who was speeding, lost control and in the process hit Mr Chingobe and his aunt.
“The deceased were walking from the West to the East along the Macha Road and in the process, a motorist hit them and died on the spot,” she said.
Mr Jalata has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and he would appear in court soon.
The two bodies are lying in the Choma General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and burial.
A check by Times of Zambia at the school around 09:30 hours, found scores of teachers and physically challenged pupils in a somber mood as they consoled each other.
Head teacher Jesart Ngulube said the school has lost a gallant teacher who was a dedicated servant who imparted knowledge in pupils.
Mr Chingobe, who had worked for the school for two years, had assisted the pupils in the learning of Information and Communication Technologies.
