Mr Thornton said yesterday that many British people and British non-governmental organisations have supported Zambia’s development through various charity work, projects and businesses.
“The establishment of hydro-power station largely through the support of private British citizens has transformed Ikeleng’i District by improving electricity to schools and the hospital,” Mr Thornton said in a statement issued by the British High Commission public relations section.
He said the availability of electricity was also attracting new investments, such as pineapple processing plant, farms, new Government buildings, quarrying and block making that would create employment for the locals.
Mr Thornton said Ikeleng’i benefited from other kinds of support from British citizens.
An example was the establishment of Kalene Mission Hospital which was established by a British settler, Walter Fisher and private doctors, churches and organisations from the United Kingdom continued to support the hospital.
Mr Thornton said he was happy to be joining President Edgar Lungu on his visit to landmine victims in Ikeleng’i District today.
The High Commissioner said the visit to Ikeleng’i would help him see for himself the various humanitarian and developmental projects and available opportunities for further cooperation between the two countries.
