AN impressive net score of 69 at the weekend gave junior golfer Chongo Nkalamo the Samsung Lusaka Monthly medal title that came with K3,000 and a Samsung Light mobile phone.
Nkalamo, who plays off six handicap, expressed delight at taking the title which was his second in a calendar year after doing the same in August last year when he also took home a Samsung phone.
“I am happy at winning this but I am alive to the fact that it is just a club medal and what I would want is to get a national title. I will be going to school in Cape Town soon and I hope to get into the University golf team and improve my golf,” he said.
Taking second place in the A-Division was Club 2015 champion Yakub Yousuf who brought home 72, two better than Sydney Wemba, who finished third and took home a wireless Samsung mobile phone charger.
In the B Division, Joel Mbambara was king, winning after a count back on Chris Zulu on 73 net while Gibson Phiri was third on 74.
In the C Division, John Kalenga took the top honour with a 71 net score, five better than Will Smith with Likando Nawa a point further on 77.
In the auxiliary prizes, Leon Kotze took the nearest to the pin award after his effort on the ninth hole while Ebrahim Patel took the longest drive award for the competition held on the fifth hole.
Meanwhile, Lusaka Golf Club captain Nsama Mataka praised Samsung for aiding out his golf club with the sponsorship of the monthly medal. He said it was because of such competitions that the club keeps thriving.
“Thanks to Samsung for the exciting prizes and also to you all who took part. I played with Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) President Joel Malanji and Noel Nkoma and together, out score should have been above 200 but seriously, we had a great day,” Mataka said.
The Lusaka Golf Club will this month tee-off the three month long Jewel-of Africa Greensome Match Play tournament that will bring together 64 players.
Organising committee chairperson Clive Shamwana the tournament will have 32 teams of two players each and will be played on knock-out basis.
Shamwana said the pre-quarterfinal will be held this month before the knockouts reach the final which has tentatively been set for October this year at the Lusaka Golf Club.
He praised Jewel of Africa, a gemstone trading company, for sponsoring the matchplay as it was through the help of the corporate world that was helping the sport improve.
