FIRST Lady Esther Lungu has called for increased investment to promote early childhood education in the country.
Ms Lungu said it was sad that quality early childhood education was only a preserve of the elite in society.
She said this on Saturday at a fundraising dinner at Arakan Barracks for the construction of a nursery school.
Mrs Lungu said early childhood education improved children’s intellectual capabilities in their developmental stages.
“Government should invest more in early childhood education in order to provide education even to disadvantaged children in society,” she said.
Mrs Lungu praised MFUTI Ladies Club for the initiative to construct a nursery and that the school would be beneficial to the surrounding community.
She paid tribute to community schools, especially in rural areas for making efforts to promote early childhood education among disadvantaged children.
MFUTI Ladies Club patron Christine Mihova said the nursery school would help make a difference in the barracks and surrounding areas.
“We believe and trust that this nursery school will greatly help in educating the children in the barracks and even those outside the barracks,” she said.
