800,000 get Social Cash Transfer

MORE than 800,000 people around the country have benefited from the Government’s Social Cash Transfer scheme, Vice-President Inonge Wina has said.
Ms Wina said an additional 50,000 households will next month be placed on the scheme apart.
Ms Wina said this in Lusaka yesterday during a workshop for members of Parliament on the Social Cash Transfer scheme held at Parliament buildings.
The scheme has benefited a total 874,188 people. From this figure, 89,171 are female while 56,527 are male beneficiaries.
Ms Wina said that the scheme had positively contributed to nutrition, health, education and livestock ownership by the beneficiaries.
The Government has since procured 46 Toyota Land Cruisers and 5,000 bicycles which were distributed to the implementing districts and provinces.
Ms Wina said the Government would continue to work hard and ensure that the programme reached the vast majority of the vulnerable groups.
Government would additionally mobilise resources to cater for citizens who still lack adequate social protection.
It is also currently undertaking the national disability survey and Ms Wina urged the MPs to take keen interest in the survey to enhance programming of different interventions.
“MPs should assist in resource mobilisation and ensure effective messaging about the programme,” she said.
Community Development, Mother and Child Health Minister Emerine Kabanshi said the Social Cash Transfer scheme would help reduce poverty among beneficiary households.
She urged the MPs to assist implement the programme in a successful way.
