‘KCM jobs safe’

KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) has assured that no decision has been made to lay off employees or terminate their contracts and to close down operations at Nchanga Underground Mine and Nkana Refinery.
KCM manager, public relations and communications Shapi Shachinda said the company’s operations and production were still afloat and would not closedown as portrayed by some sections of society.

Mr Shachinda said KCM had not made any decision to either close Nchanga Mine or to scale down operations at the Nkana Refinery.
“KCM is not closing the Nchanga Underground Mine, contrary to media reports on 31st July 2015,Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) wishes to clarify that it has not made a decision to close the Nchanga underground mine nor scale down operations at the Nkana Refinery,” Mr Shachinda said.
He said the memo that circulated on Friday morning did not have any sanctions from the company.
“This memo has no official sanction from within the company. The basis of media stories circulating was an unofficial,” he said.
He said KCM was in close consultation with Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) and the Government on the implications of load-shedding.
“The implications of electricity cuts are still unclear,” he said.
He said the welfare and livelihoods of employees and contractors at KCM were foremost in decision making about the impact of the current power situation.
