By JAMES KUNDA –
A FIFTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD peasant farmer has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for trafficking in illegal drugs.
The Kabwe magistrates’ court sentenced Robert Chilufya, of Chilufya Village in Luano District of Central Province, after finding him guilty of trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 683.3 kilogrammes after his arrest by the Drug-Enforcement Commission (DEC).
DEC deputy public relations officer Mutale Chileshe said in a statement yesterday that Chilufya would serve the term with hard labour as principal resident magistrate John Mbuzi found him guilty of the offence.
“Chilufya was apprehended last week in Luano Valley. He has been known for supplying drugs in the area and has been on the DEC watch-list for more than six months,” Mr Chileshe said.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man of Lusaka has been arrested by the DEC for trafficking in heroin and loose cannabis.
Moses Nguni of Matero Township was in possession of 14 sachets of heroin and 37.3 grammes of loose cannabis near his home in Shadreck area.
He will appear in court soon.
