THE K50,000-rich sponsored Kavulamungu Bargain Centre (KBC) sports tournament reaches its climax today with teams battling for honours in football and netball in Malambo.
About 16 teams enter the football competition with 11 squaring it out in netball skirmishes.
The three-day tournament being played in Malambo in Mambwe District will be graced by area Member of Parliament (MP) Jacob Shuma.
Kavulamungu Bargain Centre general manager Muneer Mitha said yesterday that the winners of the tournament would walk away with K5,000 and a trophy while the runners-up would equally be given a token of appreciation.
Mitha said the company decided to organise the tournament as part of ploughing back into the community through its corporate social responsibility (CSR).
He said Malambo was known as an area for keeping wildlife and that the tournament was one way of keeping the people busy, thereby keeping them away from poaching.
“Through sports, I think we are assured that such places like Malambo can produce another Kalusha Bwalya or Elijah Litana. This is why we thought of organising a tournament, and it’s one of the biggest so far. We had one last year and we hope this year’s event can be bigger and better,” Mitha said.
