By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE at Levy Mwanawasa –
Zesco 5 Nkana 3
AN electrifying atmosphere characterised the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium yesterday as champions Zesco United put up a dominant performance to twice come from behind to silence the noisy Nkana fans in an exciting eight-goal thriller played before a partisan crowd.
This highly intense MTN-FAZ Super League Week 20 encounter saw Nkana complete an 11-year unsuccessful attempt for a victory over Zesco since earning promotion back to the top flight football in 2004.
It was a win that saw Zesco extend their lead to 46 points to open up a seven-point lead over second-placed Zanaco as Nkana dropped to 10th place with 25 points.
Diminutive midfielder Simon Bwalya opened the floodgates when he powered in a sixth minute header from the far post off a Donashano Malama’s throw in to give Nkana the lead. But Zesco responded quickly with Mwape Mwelwa tapping in a Clatous Chama free-kick to restore parity on 16 minutes.
Fred ‘Soutra’ Tshimenga restored Nkana’s lead six minutes later with a thunderbolt strike on the edge of the box as goalkeeper Jacob Banda was clearly beaten.
However, the visitors’ celebrations were short-lived as Zesco reacted promptly with Winston Kalengo heading in an equaliser on 33 minutes.
Kalengo’s goal came moments after Rabson Mucheleng’anga showed superb reflex to tip over Justin Zulu’s powerful back-flip header that was heading for the net.
Zesco’s second comeback in the game exposed Nkana’s defensive problems with Chama’s cheeky strike putting the home side in the lead on 36 minutes.
Realising danger, coach Aggrey Chiyangi withdrew inefficient Kapota Kayawe for Amos Simwanza in the 39th minute but the change could not help matters as Zulu made it 4-2 after scoring from a seemingly offside position.
On 48 minutes, Banda spilled Simon Bwalya’s cross to gift loan striker Walter Bwalya with an easy tap-in to reduce Nkana’s deficit to 4-3.
But Jackson Mwanza put the game beyond the visitors’ reach when his 60th minute free-kick deflected off Given Sinyangwe to beat Mucheleng’anga in goal.
Forest 0 Napsa 1
In the early kick-off also beamed live on SuperSport, Shadreck Mayembe scored the only goal as Napsa Stars picked up a vital win to move on 19 points, same as rangers but remain stuck on 14th position.
Forest had themselves to blame after missing several chances that would have seen them take a lead and were duly punished by Mayembe who headed in a Brian Lubaba well-struck free-kick in the 76th minute, a goal that Wilson Mwale’s men defended till the final whistle.
Forest remain stuck on 23 points but four points off the relegation zone.
Zanaco 1 Buffaloes 1
At Sunset Stadium, SANDRA MWILA reports that there was a 40-minute delay as Green Buffaloes refused to start the game due to lack of security at the venue as police officers arrived late.
However, this was despite the earlier match between Lusaka Dynamos and Nchanga Rangers, played at the same venue, going ahead without security personnel.
.Zanaco moved into second place on difference over Power whom they tie on 39 points while Buffaloes moved to 30 points.
Dynamos 2 Rangers 0
Luka Chamanga scored directly from a corner kick as Dynamos recorded a morale boosting win over Rangers, who were left starring the relegation waters.
Emmanuel Habasimbi gave Dynamos the lead in the 10th minute after finishing off a Collins Kombe pass before Chamanga made sure of the result in the 26th minute to lift his side up to 27 points while Rangers are fourth from bottom on 19 points.
Nkwazi 4 Blades 1
From Edwin Imboela Stadium, hosts Nkwazi consolidated fourth place with a well-deserved thrashing of struggling Konkola Blades to move to 34 points while the Chililabombwe side remained on 19 points and just out of the drop zone on goal difference.
Gift Lukwesa opened the scoring after heading in a Kennedy Lungu which surprisingly slipped past Collins Chomba palms at the stroke of half time.
Eagles 2 Wanderers 1
‘MIGHTY’ Mufulira Wanderers week went from bad to worse after the legendary side lost away to Green Eagles at the Independence Stadium in Choma, a defeat that came barely 24 hours after the FAZ disciplinary committee slapped them with a home ban.
Assembly 0 Arrows 1
RED Arrows may not be the most exciting team to watch in the league, but they did the barest minimum required in a football match which was to score and defend well against a poor National Assembly, reports SHAMAOMA MUSONDA from Woodlands Stadium.
Striker Francis Kombe scored the only goal of the match watched by a small crowd 12 minutes from time as Arrows rose to an impressive sixth position on the table with 29 points, just eclipsing Wanderers on goal difference.
Assembly, with a seventh straight loss, might as well start thinking of life in Division-One as they anchor the table on 14 points.
Playing today: Power v Nakambala Leopards
