By FELIX MALUNGA –
THE Zambia Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) yesterday came to the rescue of the Roan Antelope Golf Club by donating three golf sets to help drive the sport’s growth in Luanshya.
ZJGA director, Aloysius Phiri handed two junior golf sets and another for the seniors to Roan chairperson, Ashwin Harry.
Phiri said the two junior golf sets came from the world governing body, the Royal and Ancient (R&A) of Saint Andrews in Scotland, while the other set for seniors was bought from his own resources.
He said ZJGA received 24 sets from R&A and another 26 were donated by United Kingdom-based golf administrator, Nick Howe and that ZJGA would give two sets to all golf clubs across the country.
Phiri said he approached Howe some time back to help with golf kit for the development of the sport in Zambia.
“I asked Nick to help with golf kit for the development of the sport. He donated 26 sets while the other 24 came from R&A. The idea is to grow the game of golf,” he said.
In receiving the golf kit, Harry paid tribute to ZJGA and Phiri for heeding the cry of Roan in the club’s quest to grow the sport in Luanshya.
“On behalf of Roan Golf Club and the executive, I would like to thank ZJGA for this good gesture. This will help us in the promotion of golf in Luanshya,” he said.
Harry, who is a former Ndola Golf Club captain, also paid tribute to Phiri for donating a golf set from his personal resources  for the senior golf development.
He appealed to Luanshya residents to come on board and join Roan as golfers and also encourage the juniors to take up the sport.
Roan vice-captain, Paul Bbole said as the person in charge of junior golf at the club, he was happy with ZJGA’s donation.
