ZAMBIA Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) president Moono Mwila has said the national team second place finish at the inaugural All-Africa Girls Golf Championship in Kenya is an indication that the sport is growing.
The Tina Nawa-captained side struck silver after finishing second to the hosts who posted an impressive gross score of 708 to win the 2015 edition, leaving Zambia in second position on 748 gross.
Apart from being runners-up in the team event after three days of action, Nawa tied for the second position with Kenyan Kellie Gachaga on a gross score of 236, nine strokes ahead of another Zambian, Jahaanvie Walia.
Mwila said in an interview yesterday that she was proud of the girl’s performance and singled out 15-year-old Walia as one of the juniors who had improved greatly.
“She (Walia) is coming up well and that’s the reason we selected her to represent Zambia at three competitions this year. She’s young and I know she will get even better if she stays focused and keeps practicing hard,” Mwila said.
Walia was happy with the confidence the association had shown in her by picking her to be part of the junior national at big events.
“It feels amazing. I almost successfully defended my title during captain’s tankard last week. I think being a 15-year-old and maintaining my good performance in both academics and golf is a great achievement for me,” she said.
