By JULIUS PHIRI –
ABOUT 5,000 tonnes of tobacco have been bought from farmers during the tobacco floors in Eastern Province this year.
Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) regional inspector, Herold Siandula said that tobacco buying companies in the region spent about US$8.8 million in purchasing the produce.
Mr Siandula said that about 430 tonnes of tobacco for independent tobacco growers was still stuck in the area due to lack of market.
He said the remaining tobacco was not much compared to about 2.2 million kilogrammes, which remained in 2011. Mr Siandula, however, said efforts were being made to ensure that tobacco was bought since the marketing exercise had not yet closed.
