Lusaka Province Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday it was suspected that the candle that was burning at the time must have fallen off and set the house ablaze.
The children who suffocated to death are a boy James Chombe, 10, a girl Manifike Chombe, five, and another girl Baraguruwayo Chombe, aged four.
Their eight-year-old sibling Marifikeni, eight, a male, survived and is admitted to the University Teaching Hospital where he is being treated.
The family is Rwandese.
“The parents (Joseph Chombe, 40, and the mother Mazyano Sifa) were not home at the time of the incident because they were at their shop where they sell merchandise,” Ms Katanga said.
She said the neighbours who observed the fire tried to put it off but failed to completely do so.
The fire brigade later arrived at the scene and managed to put out the fire and save one child.
Ms Katanga said the entire household property was burnt to ashes.
Meanwhile, a two-year- eight-months boy in Chongwe was on Monday burnt to death after his four-year-old friend set the yard on fire.
The two were playing by themselves when the four-year-old set the lawn ablaze with match sticks.
The older boy then tried to take away the flames, leaving the younger one unattended to who was then burnt to death.
Ms Katanga said the matter was not immediately reported to police but police officers followed up the matter after learning about it from the media.
