THE Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has warned teachers against engaging in examination malpractices ahead of this year’s school examinations.
BETUZ Copperbelt Secretary Christopher Simukonda said the union would not represent teachers who will get involved in any form of examination malpractice.
Mr Simukonda said in a statement issued in Ndola yesterday that teachers played an important role in national development, therefore they should not involve themselves in vices such as leaking examination papers.
“As a union, we will not stand by any teacher who will get involved in examination malpractice therefore we would like to warn teachers to refrain from any form of malpractice in this year’s examination,” he said
He said the involvement of teachers in examination malpractices would only tarnish the image of the teaching profession and erode the confidence that people had in the education system.
Mr Simukonda said BETUZ remained committed to ensuring that examination malpractices were addressed through increased sensitisation among teachers.
He said the union was tasked with the responsibility of making a positive contribution to the development of the education sector.
He called on the pupils as they prepared for their examinations to concentrate on their studies and not to rely on examination leakages.
“Pupils should study hard and female pupils should not fall prey to men who demand for sex in exchange for leaked examination papers,” he said
