TEAM Zambia new call-ups have expressed confidence of putting up a good performance and end South Africa’s dominance ahead of the All-Africa Senior Golf Championship set for Kenya.
Immediate-past national junior captain Peter Munyinya said in an interview yesterday that South Africa had dominated Zambia and Africa for way too long and it was time to end their supremacy.
Zambia this weekend travels to Nairobi for the All-Africa Senior Golf Championship where they will encounter, among others, defending champions South Africa.
“We have played South Africa at junior level and they keep beating us but we are not too far. We have been working really hard and we can see that we are getting close and maybe this will be the opportunity,” Munyinya said.
Munyinya twice saw South Africa finish ahead of Zambia at the Africa Junior Championship held in Lusaka before graduating to be a senior.
Kelvin Chibuye, one of the country’s exciting juniors, said the team was working hard to finally get the better of South Africa.
One other payer who is yearning for a day Zambia will beat South Africa at a competition is Kelvin Chibuye, the left hander from Ndola with amazingly good long putts.
“It’s South Africa all the time but we have to get to beat them. I want the Zambia win over South Africa to come in my life-time, especially being a member of that wining team,” Chibuye said.
He hailed the training with fellow national team players, adding it was a privilege to be a member of the senior national team despite still being a junior.
A seven-member national golf team was called into camp on Friday where top four players will be picked to represent Zambia at the challenge.
Those summoned are Munyinya, Denmark Mulambo, Sydney Wemba, Kelvin Chibuye, Boyd Kapalamoto and Gabriel Chibale while Aaron Sim fukwe is unwell.
After a training session at the Lusaka Golf Club on Friday, the team relocated to Chainama Golf Club yesterday.
South Africa has dominated African golf at both junior and senior levels and only once, this year, has the continental junior title gone outside their grip when Uganda hosted and won the Africa junior championship.
