Zanaco 2 Blades 0
ZESCO United’s lead at the summit of the MTN-FAZ Super League table was yesterday cut to seven points by 10-man Zanaco, who beat relegation-bound Konkola Blades to keep their title chase alive.
Zanaco’s win yesterday in a Week 26 fixture meant that the bankers moved to 53 points and reclaimed second place off Power Dynamos, who are on 51 points, with Zesco on 60 points and has to play both teams in the remaining four fixtures.
Zesco host Power on Wednesday while the match against Zanaco is in a Week 29 fixture in Ndola.
The home side knew that nothing less than a victory would reignite their title hopes after Zesco dropped precious points in their 2-all draw away to Green Eagles on Saturday and Zanaco responded well through Ernest Mbewe who headed in a Boyd Musonda cross in the 22nd minute.
Zanaco were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute after referee Stanley Hachiwa sent off Fackson Kapumbu for a crude foul on Godfrey Chabanga. Keeper Racha Kola had defender George Chilufya to thank for clearing a Erick Chisala attempt in the 44th minute after he had left his lines.
Moses Phiri doubled the bankers’ advantage with a thunderbolt shot that hit the upright before landing inside the net following a well worked out sole effort as he raced with the ball past the Blades defenders.
Blades are third from bottom on 23 points and are starring the face of relegation.
Dynamos 1 Arrows 2
Former league champions Red Arrows put up a terrific comeback to beat a freefalling Lusaka Dynamos and move up to 38 points on the log in an early kickoff played at the same venue.
Dynamos, who remain stuck on 28 points, made a false start taking the lead in the 28th minute through Conlyde Luchanga who unleashed a low shot passed Danny Munyau in goal.
Arrows started the second half stronger and it came as no surprise when they levelled scores through a Mundia Lubinda shot inside the box in the 51st minute and there was no looking back for the airmen who made sure of the result eight minutes later when Daniel Sibanda finished off a Benedict Chapeshi free kick.
Warriors 3 Paramilitary 0
‘Magnificent’ Kabwe Warriors bounced back to the MTN-FAZ Super League after a year’s absence with five games to spare after the bashing of Paramilitary took them to an impressive 70 points, reports SHAMAOMA MUSONDA.
In a highly anticipated match played at Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu Stadium, Congolese dread-locked striker Idris Mbombo netted all three goals to secure promotion for the Mohammed Fathy coached side.
This means that the 70 points Warriors have reached can only be reached or beaten by second placed Lusaka Tigers, on 53 points, who if they win the remaining six games can get to 71 points.
But third placed Nampundwe can only get to 69 points if they win their remaining six games and with two spots guaranteed for promotion, Warriors will be confirmed champions if Tigers fail to win any of their remaining six games.
