FORMER ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers midfield linchpin Alex ‘Metal’ Muzungu has died.
Muzungu, 47, died in the early hours of yesterday at Ronald Ross Hospital in Mufulira where he was admitted on Monday after an illness.
A family friend Damino Mutale confirmed Muzungu’s passing on in an interview yesterday.
“I am very saddened that the football fraternity has once again been robbed of a veteran and coach, whose contributions to the development of football is there for all people to see. He died around 03:30 hours at Ronald Ross hospital where we took him on Monday,” Mutale said.
The funeral is being held at the deceased’s house number 17, Mulongwe Road in Eastlea Township in Mufulira.
During his playing days, Muzungu starred for Wanderers and Green Buffaloes before he hanged up his boots to concentrate on coaching.
He coached Wanderers, Mufulira Blackpool, Kitwe United, Mining Rangers and Gomes where he was attached five months ago.
Burial arrangements for Muzungu, who is survived by a wife Bridget and five children, will be announced later.
