By SHAMAOMA MUSONDA –

UPSTART Moses Daka announced his arrival on the Zambian squash scene by winning the boys’ Under-15 title during the inaugural Zamtel Monthly medal tournament held at the Lusaka Club.
Daka took the title with a  2-0 final triumph over club mate Frederick Tembo as Obed Kanguma won the boys Under-11 top honours with a similar 2-0 win in the final against Jeff Champo.
But the best cheers of the day were reserved for the girls’ Under-19 category where Diana Musa came up against Christine Mwachambo in a game that needed a third set before the former took a 2-1 win.
The girls’ Under-15 category saw Memory Ngoma take the title after a 2-0 win over Elisha Mudenda in the final.
Zambia Squash Association (ZSA) president Norena Chiteba was animated in excitement as she watched the finals and later praised the sponsors for making the tournament possible.
“You saw the enthusiasm from the kids. This is really exciting and good for the game and we would like to once again thank Zamtel for this partnership that will not just help the sport in youth development but technical aspects as well,” she said.
Zamtel and ZSA last month signed a K240, 000 one-year kids squash sponsorship deal with a promise from the telecommunication service provider of sustainable support.
Under the deal, Zamtel will release K20, 000 every month to the ZSA to go towards youth tournament with the association taking part of the amount towards training coaches and  referee as well as,  buying kit for the winners and the Zamtel Challenge tournament during school holidays.
ZSA fixtures secretary Jeff Musonda was pleased with the competition saying it had met the expectations for starters and that the numbers and competition will increase with more tournaments.
