MORE than K40 million will be spent on the construction of regional veterinary laboratories countrywide, Livestock and Fisheries Permanent Secretary David Shamulenge has said.
Dr Shamulenge said Government is currently constructing laboratories in eight provinces and that, this was aimed at bringing livestock and veterinary services closer to the farmers.
He said in an interview yesterday that the move was also meant to prevent and control livestock diseases.
“More than K40 million will be spent on the construction of regional veterinary laboratories country wide. Government is currently constructing laboratories in eight provinces to bring livestock and veterinary services closer to the farmers and help in the prevention and control of diseases,” he said.
He said that each veterinary laboratory would gobble about K4.6 million.
Dr Shamulenge said the ministry was targeting to eliminate livestock diseases in the country as it was a requirement for any country to penetrate the European Union market to export beef products.
The Permanent Secretary said the move would also make the country a fish and livestock exporter in order to earn the country the much needed foreign exchange.
