89 illegal immigrants nabbed

A TOTAL of 89 illegal immigrants have been arrested in the country in less than two weeks.
The Immigration Department in a latest update yesterday indicated that 34 had been rounded up while last week, 55 had been cornered in an operation in Kabangwe area of Lusaka.
On Tuesday this week, the department deported 17 foreigners for illegal stay and unlawful entry.
Among the 34, were 15 Tanzanians who were arrested in Ndola, three  Congolese and one suspected Congolese in Chingola and two other Tanzanians arrested in Kitwe.
In Lusaka, two Congolese, one suspected Congolese, one Somali, one Mozambican and one Zimbabwean were also arrested for a similar offence.
Immigration public relations officer Namati Nshinka said during the same period six foreigners had been arrested for unlawful entry.
These included three Malawians arrested in Chipata, one Congolese and one Tanzanian arrested in Kazungula and Isoka respectively.
In Isoka, a Burundese was also arrested for using an invalid Travel Document of Identity (TDI).
In other developments, in Lusaka, on Monday, an Egyptian was arrested for engaging in selling carpets not stipulated in his employment permit.
Mr Nshinka said similarly in Mansa, an Indian was also arrested for failing to observe the conditions of his employment by distributing goods for a company other than that stipulated in his permit.
Meanwhile, Immigration officers in Lusaka on Tuesday this week, arrested an Angolan after he attempted to obtain a duplicate Green National Registration Card (NRC) belonging to a Zambian.
He said the department also served five foreigners with notices to leave Zambia.
Among them were three Taiwanese in Lusaka, who were ordered to return to Namibia which is their country of residence for overstaying, an Irish was served with a notice to leave for a similar offence.
In Nakonde, one Tanzanian was served with a notice to leave the country for unlawful stay.
