THE United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has praised Zambia for its contribution to taking in and providing for refugees.
UNHCR representative to the African Union (AU) and the Economic Commission of Africa, Cosmas Chanda says Zambia has contributed immensely to the welfare and protection of refugees.
Mr Chanda was speaking at the United Nations Economic Commission Africa offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He said Zambia had contributed to humanitarian works by providing agricultural land and education to refugees and asylum seekers.
This is according to a statement issued by First Secretary, Press and Tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia, Naomi Chulu.
“Mr Chanda observed that Zambia has always desired to find solutions to the plight of refugees by providing security, social and economic amenities,” the statement reads.
Mr Chanda said the integration of Angolan refugees into the Zambian society had worked well and brought a solution to the plight of the remaining refugees.
He applauded the AU and its member States for formulating regional and continental laws that govern the treatment of refugees and internally displaced people.
Mr Chanda said the legal framework, coupled with generosity, had made Africa stand out in terms of good treatment of refugees and other asylum seekers.
