ZRA officer dies in car crash

A THIRTY-THREE-YEAR-old Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) officer in Nakonde has died in a road traffic accident as he was returning from a Christmas party.
Gilbert Phiri is believed to have met his fate when he was coming from the party organised by ZRA.

Both Muchinga Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka and Nakonde District Commissioner Field Simwinga confirmed that Mr Phiri of Customs Township died on the spot when his car hit into a tree after he lost control due to speeding.
“We have recorded a fatal accident which occurred over the weekend, involving an unregistered Honda Fit motor vehicle driven by Gilbert Phiri.
“He lost control and hit into a tree due to speeding. He died on the spot and there was no passenger on board,” he said.
Mr Daka said the car was extensively damaged and that the driver, who sustained internal injuries, died on the spot.
Mr Phiri’s body is in Nakonde District Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.
Meanwhile, a man of Namwala District in Southern Province has been shot dead inside the house of his third wife.
Nelson Mapopwe, 58, of Chidakwa Village in Chief Muchila’s area, was shot dead by assailants who are on the run.
Provincial Police Chief Goldwin Phiri said Mr Mapopwe was killed in the early hours of Sunday.
The matter was reported to Niko Police Post in Namwala by a resident, Chineli Kapopwe, 58, of Shababwa Village in the same chiefdom.
“Mr Mapopwe was shot dead around 03:00 hours on December 13, 2015,” Mr Phiri said.
Police visited the scene and picked the body which is in Namwala Hospital mortuary.
