EASTERN Company and Orange Clubs retained their Africa Hockey Inter-Club Championship men’s and women’s titles respectively after winning their tight finals played at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
In the men’s finals, Eastern Company of Egypt beat their counterparts Sharkia 2-1 to keep the title after a week-long tournament. To reach the finals, Eastern Company beat Niger Flikers of Nigeria 5-3.
Niger Flikers, however, managed to recover to beat Trustees in the third place playoff via a 3-2 scoreline.
In the women’s category, Orange of Kenya got the women title after beating Ghana Police 3-2 as Sharkia finished third after beating Ghana Revenue Authority 2-0 to take bronze.
Meanwhile, Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) coordinator Thomas Mumba said in an interview after the tournament came to a close that the championship was a success despite a few challenges.
Mumba said the association was using the tournament to also select players for the Zambia national team.
Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) chairperson Mwamba Kalenga, who graced the closing ceremony, commended ZHA for staging a successful tournament.
