THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has given Moghreb Tétouan, a Moroccan side, a 14-day ultimatum to pay Chipolopolo defender, Aaron Katebe, his outstanding dues.
Katebe, three weeks ago parted company with Tétouan after complaining about the club’s failure to pay him a signing fee amounting to US$ 223,000 out of the initial $240, 000 agreed in contract.
FAZ general secretary George Kasengele has since written the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to help sort out the issue with Tétouan within 14 days or the matter will be taken to FIFA.
According to a letter sent to FRMF and obtained by the Times dated December 24, Kasengele stated that Katebe’s contract was terminated as a result of lack of payment of his contractual obligations.
“It has come to our attention that Aaron Katebe a Zambian player contracted by your club Moghreb Tétouan FC has had his contract terminated as a result of lack of payment of his contractual obligations.
“According to the documents we have received, the club owes the player a total amount of $233,000 out of the total sum $240,000 which was agreed upon signing of the contract between player and the club.
“We have been further informed that the club has only paid $7,000 and that no salary has been paid to the player,” Kasengele said.
Kasengele said this in itself was a serious breach of contract in which the FRMF should resolve before FAZ refers the matter to FIFA player status committee.
“We therefore request immediate intervention so that the player is given what is due to him without recourse to FIFA.
“We therefore wish to state that should the club fail to pay the player within a period of 14 days, we will have no option but open a case through the FIFA player’s status committee.
“The behaviour of your club to threaten the player with deportation can’t be allowed in modern football,” Kasengele said.
Katebe joined the Moroc Botola outfit from Platinum FC in Zimbabwe after penning a 2-year deal.
A club statement posted on December 12 stated that Katebe had asked to leave Tétouan after spending much of the time on the bench.
“The Chipolopolo defender asked to leave having spent most of his time on the bench and the Club acted precisely by terminating his contract,” read a statement on Moghreb Tetouan’s official website.
But Katebe in an interview on December 13 said it was actually himself who terminated the contract because the club was not paying him the salary contrary to reports that he was axed due to unsatisfactory performance.
Moghreb Club President threatened the defender that he risks being deported out of the country if he claims his wages.
