WE totally agree with State House spokesperson Amos Chanda who has hailed the performance of President Edgar Lungu, describing it as exceptional.
At the moment, Mr Lungu is the most popular political figure in Zambia with a track record that is mindboggling going by the short period he has been in power.
Notable among his achievements are developmental policies that will see Zambia progress economically and politically.
With this track record, we feel President Lungu, who has already been adopted by the ruling party as the candidate for the 2016 elections, will not face a serious challenge even from the main opposition party, the United Party for National Development (UPND) because at the moment he is the most popular political leader in the country.
Hate him or love him, the PF leader is extraordinarily popular countrywide even in the Southern Province where he has made inroads in development, endearing himself to the masses.
As Mr Chanda has noted, in economic circles, President Lungu has come at a time when external economic factors have impacted negatively on Zambia and other countries in the region.
Despite this impediment, Mr Lungu has handled the situation skillfully by unveiling a broad package of measures at the Press conference he held at State House recently.
The measures range from tight fiscal and monetary management to capital projects envisaged to put the country back on the path of economic stability.
Once implemented, these measures are expected to spawn the transformation of Zambia from being a copper-dependent country to an agro-based economy.
The economic blueprint will also see the stabilisation of the local currency and creation of thousands of jobs, especially on the Copperbelt.
The President has also outlined the practical steps the Bank of Zambia and the ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry will soon take to stabilise and strengthen the Kwacha.
The two institutions are also expected to facilitate the substitution of unnecessary imports that are responsible for the high demand for the United States dollar, which is weakening the local currency, through the improvement of the quality of local produce and products.
Whether you like the party or not, the PF’s trademark is national development, especially the road network which has transformed Zambia radically.
