Expedite irrigation scheme, Govt urged

THE Kafue District Farmers Association (KDFA) has called on Government to speed up the irrigation scheme project in Kafue to enhance diversification and food security.

KDFA chairperson Chuma Siyanga said government should fast track the irrigation schemes in the district to promote crop diversification and assist small scale farmers get more value from farming.

Ms Siyanga said there was need for continuous farming without depending on rainfall for farming looking at the climatic conditions the country was experiencing.

“We are worried about the agriculture situation in the area because of the low rainfall we are receiving and we would like to urge the Government to speed up irrigation infrastructure in the district,” she said.

Ms Siyanga said farmers have been affected by the rainfall pattern the country was experiencing hence the need to speed up the process which would enhance crop production in the country.

She said the irrigation scheme would help farmers to enhance crop production following dry spells the country was experiencing.

The irrigation schemes are expected to be constructed in Kafue, Chisamba and Mufurila Districts to enhance crop production in the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture has already allocated 11,000 hectares of land for irrigation schemes which will support small scale farmers in the country.
