THE Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has urged the Government to increase agricultural production in the northern region of Zambia because of the favourable rainfall pattern the area experiences.
The other regions have for the past two years experienced poor rainfall, a situation that has affected food production in the country.
JCTR public relations officer Tendai Posiana said in a statement that there was need for the Government to increase food production in northern Zambia in order to boost the country’s food security.
Ms Posiana said that the northern region was on agro-ecological region three, which had consistent rainfall pattern favourable for the growth of cash crops.
“Concerted efforts should be taken to increase productivity in the northern region of Zambia which is on agro-ecological region three, and has more and perhaps consistent rainfall to enable the country produce more food,” she said.
Ms Posiana urged the Government to develop reservoirs in areas with poor rainfall to enable farmers produce more food.
She said the Government should identify and implement programmes and policies that would have direct positive benefit and impact on lives of majority poor Zambians.
