POLICE in Lusaka have warned and cautioned veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga for uttering seditious remarks.
Dr Mwaanga was warned and cautioned at Lusaka Central Police Station yesterday where he was summoned for questioning, which took about three hours.
He was summoned following a statement he issued accusing the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) of planning to rig the forthcoming tripartite elections.
Dr Mwaanga’s remarks, which were published in The Post newspaper dated January 9, 2015, sparked concern among political stakeholders.
These included suspended MMD national youth secretary Bowman Lusambo and National Revolution Party president Cosmo Mumba, who separately lodged complaints for the police to probe Dr Mwaanga’s statement.
Dr Mwaanga arrived at the police station at 09:00 hours in the company of his wife Edna, sympathisers and lawyers Keith Mweemba, Mwangala Zaloumis, Lillian Mushota, Clavel Siyanondo and Lanco Moono.
Among those offering solidarity were Chongwe PF Member of Parliament (MP) Sylvia Masebo and her UPND counterparts Garry Nkombo for Mazabuka Central and Request Muntanga for Kalomo Central.
Others were Kasempa MMD MP Kabinga Pande, Ikeleng’i MP Elijah Muchima, former MMD national secretary Richard Kachingwe and current spokesperson Raphael Nakachinda.
After the questioning, Dr Mwaanga left the police building at 12:06 hours and addressed his sympathisers.
“I just want to say thank you very much for coming and this is the type of support that shows love and unity.
“A warn and caution statement has been recorded and I am going home now. Thank you all very much for coming and God bless you all,” Dr Mwaanga said.
Mr Mweemba said Dr Mwaanga had been warned and cautioned for seditious practice contrary to Section 67 of the Penal Code.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said Dr Mwaanga had not yet been charged.
