THE Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWU) has warned members against engaging in political activities in the run-up to the August 11 tripartite elections.

Union president Davy Chiyobe said civil servants had a constitutional role to serve the Government of the day and to be neutral in their work.

“We have the duty to support the Government of the day in formulating, explaining and implementing policies, conducting administrative affairs, delivering public services and undertaking law enforcement and regulatory functions in accordance with the decision of the Government and direction of principal officers.

“We have to serve the community and contribute to the effective governance and political stability of the country,” Mr Chiyobe said.

He was speaking yesterday at a Press briefing in Lusaka.

Mr Chiyobe said it was important for civil servants to carry out their duties fully irrespective of their personal political views.

He said those who wanted to participate in politics were free to resign and join politics but added that the union would protect its members against victimisation by some political cadres.
